Borussia Dortmund ensured their UEFA Champions League fate remains in their own hands with a crucial victory at home to SSC Napoli.

Last season's finalists responded to their recent rocky patch with an absorbing display, but despite taking a two-goal lead through Marco Reus's early penalty and Jakub Błaszczykowski's second-half finish, seemed destined for a nervy finish after Lorenzo Insigne pulled one back for the Italian visitors. However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's first goal at this level made sure of the three points and, more importantly, put Dortmund second in Group F heading into the final round of fixtures.

Match in 5

  • Dortmund join Napoli on nine points
  • Reus and Błaszczykowski put hosts in command
  • Insigne strike gives Napoli hope
  • Aubameyang seals win with first competition goal
  • 50th European Cup win, both teams can still progress

Reaction

We knew that this would be a spectacular game. We wasted a lot of opportunities, but Reina also made some great saves. We worked hard today and recorded a highly deserved win.

Our mentality is to try to win every game against any opponent and we played the right way. We were facing one of the best counterattacking teams in Europe and it was not easy.

    The final whistle is blown.
Jürgen Klopp looks a relieved man as the final whistle sounds. His side have come up with a great performance when it was really needed to take the three points and keep their UEFA Champions League campaign alive. Goals from Marco Reus, Jakub Błaszczykowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang mean this group will go down to the wire on matchday six.

    Aubameyang (Dortmund) scores!
Pablo Armero loses the ball on the half way line. Robert Lewandowski breaks forwards and enters the penalty area on the right. He looks like he has lost the ball as he is surrounded by defenders but he manages to smuggle it to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. With Pepe Reina closing him down and the angle very narrow the Dortmund No17 produces an exquisite chipped finish to make it 3-1.
