Clayton the hero for Porto

FC Porto coach Octávio Machada had hinted prior to his side's game with Celtic FC on Wednesday that his side needed to improve their finishing and in Brazilian striker Clayton, they had just the man for the job.

Having scored only two goals in their previous three UEFA Champions League matches, FC Porto turned on the style in the Das Antas stadium to ease past Celtic FC in emphatic style. Coach Octávio Machada had hinted prior to the game that his side needed to improve their finishing and in Brazilian striker Clayton, they had just the man for the job.

Confidence and quality
Signed from CD Santa Clara in 1999, 26-year-old Clayton scored twice in a thrilling 3-0 victory and could have doubled that tally had luck been on his side. His first came after just 60 seconds with a well-placed header from Capucho's cross and his second reeked of confidence and quality as he let fly with an unstoppable drive that gave Celtic goalkeeper Robert Douglas no chance. Capucho, the Porto captain, was in outstanding form as he ran the Celtic defence ragged and received a standing ovation from the home fans when he was substituted towards the end of the match

Realistic contenders
The victory sees Porto leapfrog their Scottish opponents but, perhaps more importantly, it means that Celtic fall from top spot to third place. Juventus FC beat Rosenborg BK 1-0 in the other Group E match tonight and the Italian giants now sit proudly at the summit of what is proving to be a tight group. There is still all to play for with two games remaining, but Celtic will have to improve on this performance if they are to be realistic contenders.

'We defended poorly'
"We didn't play well enough, we didn't have enough energy," said Celtic manager Martin O'Neill. "We defended poorly as well. We were always chasing the match. We looked tired - these are big games for us. Porto were a very good side tonight. The thing we didn't want to do was give them an early goal so they could settle."

'More than capable'
Celtic face Rosenborg in Matchday Five next week, knowing that a win is crucial if they are to maintain any hopes of progressing to the second group stage of the Champions League.  "We've got two games to try and do something," he said. "The competition is there for us to do something with. At Rosenborg we will have to win the game which we are more than capable of doing."
