History
• Founded in summer 1907, HJK are the oldest and – in terms of trophies – most successful club in Finnish history; the title was first contested in a cup format in 1908, HJK triumphing for the first time in 1911, overcoming Åbi IFK 7-1 in the final – they defeated local rivals Helsingfors IFK by the same margin to retain the crown in 1912.

• By the time the first league tournament was introduced in 1930, HJK had won seven championships, including three in a row from 1917 to 1919; titles proved harder to come by in the middle years of the century, thanks to competition from local titans like HPS Helsinki and HIFK Helsinki and increasingly impressive sides from outside the capital.

• HJK's recovery began with the return of Aulis Rytkönen to his home country, the striker having become Finland's first professional player when he represented Toulouse FC from 1952 until 1960; as a player-coach he led HJK to their first title in 26 years in 1964 and laid the ground for future successes, though they had to wait until 1973 for their next league title.

• Ever-presents in the top flight since 1963 HJK have collected regular honours and achieved a notable first in 1998/99, beating FC Yerevan and FC Metz in the qualifying rounds to become Finland's first UEFA Champions League group stage contenders; that success and others led to Antti Muurinen moving on to become national team coach.

• After five years in that role and a further spell at FC Lahti, Muurinen returned to HJK in the autumn of 2007, winning the Finnish Cup in his first campaign; successive titles in 2009 and 2010 confirmed HJK's position as the pre-eminent force in the Veikkausliiga.
