Newcastle pay Partizan penalty

Newcastle United FC 0-1 FK Partizan (Agg: 1-1 - Partizan win 4-3 on pens) FK Partizan cause a big shock.

FK Partizan claimed a shock place in the UEFA Champions League group stage at the expense of Newcastle United FC, who reached the second group stage last season, after winning a tense penalty shoot-out against the English side at St James' Park.

Sudden-death victory
The champions of Serbia and Montenegro wiped out Newcastle's advantage from their 1-0 first-leg victory, thanks to a second-half goal from striker Ivica Iliev, and then completed the comeback with a 4-3 sudden-death victory on penalties.

Lightning-quick break
Iliev put Partizan ahead on the night in the 50th minute, rounding off a lightning-quick break out of defence following a Newcastle corner by slotting a pass from impressive captain Sasa Ilic into the net.

Shearer miss
In the first five penalties of the shoot-out, three players from each side, including Newcastle's former England captain Alan Shearer, failed to convert. When Newcastle's Aaron Hughes blasted his effort over, Partizan right-back Milivoje Cirkovic then put away the decisive kick to see his side through to Thursday's draw and leave Newcastle with the consolation prize of a place in the UEFA Cup.
