Mancini's night to remember

Coach Roberto Mancini hailed "a great night" as FC Internazionale Milano reached the last eight on Tuesday.

A hat-trick from Adriano helped FC Internazionale Milano defeat FC Porto 3-1 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 encounter at the Giuseppe Meazza. With the score at 2-0, Jorge Costa had temporarily halved the deficit for the holders but Brazilian striker Adriano completed his treble in the dying minutes to wrap up a 4-2 aggregate victory and book Inter's place in the last eight alongside Serie A rivals Juventus FC and AC Milan.

Roberto Mancini, Inter coach
It was a great night for us. I am happy for the fans, they deserved a night like this even if we made them suffer a bit. We made a mistake when Porto scored, but it was our only error of the game. I think we defended very well despite having to change several players due to injuries and suspension. We started very well and then sat back a bit too much. Porto kept the possession of the ball but we were dangerous on the counterattack; unfortunately we wasted too many opportunities. I liked our reaction after their goal - we immediately began to play as we should. We achieved an important result. I don't fear any particular team for the quarter-finals. The three Italian teams all deserved to reach this stage of the competition.

José Couceiro, Porto coach
As I said on the eve of the game, the team which made fewer mistakes won. We went out on to the pitch with the wrong mentality and, with all respect to Inter, the first goal was only our fault. Then we improved during the game and we created problems for Inter by playing on the flanks. Our mistakes were crucial but it was not only the fault of our defence. Inter are a very mature side, they always remained calm even when we scored a goal. Compared to last season we are a completely different side; only the name is the same.

Javier Zanetti, Inter captain
We are very happy because an important part of our season was at stake tonight. I think we played very well even if we wasted too many chances to score. I'm very happy for Adriano because he was in a need of a night like this. He is a very important player for our team and watching him so happy after a difficult period was just great.

Benni McCarthy, Porto striker
We knew it would be a difficult game after the result of the first leg. Inter were solid in defence and dangerous in attack. Their early goal made their life much easier as they could defend and counterattack. We played well at the beginning of the second half and immediately after scoring our goal, but when Inter scored the third the game was over. We are a completely different team compared to last season, but we are a very young and I think we are building a strong side for the next few seasons.
