Two goals from Mbo Mpenza were enough for ten-man RSC Anderlecht to come back twice and claim a point against LOSC Lille Métropole but it was a result that ended the Belgian champions' hopes of progressing from UEFA Champions League Group H and Lille needing a result at group winners AC Milan on Matchday 6 to rekindle their hopes.
Claude Puel, Lille coach
We are very disappointed. I have got a very young team and they made some mistakes because they are young. It is very hard to accept that we let Anderlecht score [their second goal] seconds after we did. The first half was very intense and we were more physical than them, but made too many mistakes. The fact we only got one point is particularly sad because at the same time AEK got three points and we are in a very difficult position now. We have to do something incredible to win in Milan, and that will be very difficult. We are unhappy because the knockout stage gates were open before tonight but now they are half closed.
Frank Vercauteren, Anderlecht coach
Before the game we had many hopes of qualifying and they were all in our hands - but not anymore. I cannot criticise my players much except for the defending on the two goals. We played very well on the ground, and collectively and individually we did well. We are still making progress but not enough at this level and now we have to beat AEK to try to get a UEFA Cup place.
Mathieu Bodmer, Lille midfielder
At this level you cannot afford to make the mistakes we made tonight. We have played very well in our first four games and did OK for 20 minutes but made too many mistakes, especially on our two goals. We are usually very solid but today we weren't and this is main reason Anderlecht were able to score. Now we must win in Milan but it will be very difficult to get to the knockout stages. We must try to secure a UEFA Cup place at least though.
Matthieu Robail, Lille midfielder
The result is a very big blow for us. We had many chances to score and scored twice, but each time we made mistakes and they came back. We are frustrated and now we must focus on getting a result against Milan.
