The AEK Athens FC coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer hailed a great night for his club’s passionate supporters and Greek football after Júlio César scored the only goal against AC Milan. AEK next tackle RSC Anderlecht, needing to equal LOSC Lille Métropole’s result against AC Milan to join the Italian club - who won Group H tonight despite the defeat - in the knockout rounds.
Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, AEK coach
We coped very intelligently under pressure and knew how to keep possession. It was a great night for our fans and Greek football. Our supporters were fantastic; they kept the spirit of the team alive throughout the match. We will grow even more after this victory and I’m very happy to have seen so many happy faces tonight. We should enjoy our victory. We had never won a match before this campaign so no one thought we would end up in the top two - now we are the favourites to go through with Milan. We kept our composure as a team after losing our opening game in Milan and drawing with Anderlecht at home. I think it was a fair result because we missed two clear chances in the second half.
Carlo Ancelotti, Milan coach
We had chances to score, especially through [Filippo] Inzaghi who hit the post but luck turned its back on us. We have suffered a lot through injuries recently and these problems have taken their toll. If AEK win in Belgium they won’t need to worry about what we do against Lille. Our recent poor results are a cause for concern but we played very well tonight and did win the group. Our team is united and this qualification will help us overcome this poor patch.
