Mircea Lucescu felt FC Shakhtar Donetsk were deserved qualifiers after a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos CFP secured the Ukrainian outfit a spot in the UEFA Cup Round of 32. Nery Alberto Castillo cancelled out Matuzalem's opener to earn the home side a point but it was not enough to lift Trond Sollied's team off the foot of UEFA Champions League Group D. uefa.com rounds up the reaction from Athens.
Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar coach
My team deserve to qualify for the UEFA Cup. We played very well in the group stage and should have got more from tonight's game. We should have won but missed too many chances which was a pity. We had an advantage tonight because Olympiacos couldn't afford not to win and that allowed us to play our own game, plus I thought we defended very well. The Olympiacos supporters were impressive tonight and displayed a sense of fair play, acknowledging our superiority.
Trond Sollied, Olympiacos coach
Everyone did their best but it was not meant to be. I felt we played well, but as in other games during the group stage we conceded from a set-piece. Set-pieces are one of most important factors in football and not defending them has cost us. I take full responsibility but Rome wasn't built in a day. It was a very tight group, every game was very close and I think we deserve more, but we didn't have that extra edge to be successful.
