Olympique Lyonnais coach Gérard Houllier admitted his surprise at FC Steaua Bucuresti's efforts after the Romanian club - described as "brave" by their coach Cosmin Olaroiu - became the first side to leave the Stade de Gerland with a point in Group E.
Gérard Houllier, Lyon coach
I'm happy because we are the team with the most points of the 16 clubs to go through. I knew Steaua were a good team, especially away from home. They play good, attacking football but I was surprised to see them do so well right up until the end of the match. The only thing I want for February is to have my strikers ready because without them things are very difficult. It's also nice to have two French teams through to the next phase.
Cosmin Olaroiu, Steaua coach
Even though the match wasn't important for either team we both still wanted, and played, to win. We didn't come here to go through the motions, we wanted to show some personality and I think we were brave. My team could have won but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal.
