Zico confident of knockout berth

Coach Zico said Fenerbahçe SK "deserve to go through" after beating PSV Eindhoven and deemed being in second place with two games to play "a huge success".

Fenerbahçe SK coach Zico said his side "deserve to go through" to the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League after defeating PSV Eindhoven 2-0. The Brazilian deemed being in second place in Group G with just two games to play "a huge success", while the Dutch side's caretaker coach Jan Wouters admitted PSV were now realistically playing for third spot and a place in the UEFA Cup.

Zico, Fenerbahçe coach
My team did their best to make sure we won. I want to congratulate all of my players individually as they were motivated, smart, tough and fought hard for the result. I would also like to congratulate all the supporters. We know they support us on the good days and the bad days, but tonight we really felt they were always with us. To be in second place is a huge success, we think we will qualify together with [FC] Internazionale [Milano] but there are still two more games to play. We have to get two draws or win one of them otherwise our hopes of qualifying will be in jeopardy. In the next game, [PFC] CSKA Moskva will fight for the UEFA Cup spot and PSV Eindhoven will face a tough match as a result. We set ourselves a goal before the group started: to qualify for the knockout stage. To reach your aim you have to work hard and trust yourself. We are doing both at the moment and deserve to go through.

Jan Wouters, PSV caretaker coach
This stadium is very difficult to play in, the supporters did not stop for 90 minutes tonight. There was so much pressure on the game. We were fine in the first 15 minutes but after that we made a lot of mistakes and lost a lot of possession. Fenerbaçhe took advantage of our mistakes, scoring twice in a short space of time. All the teams in this group are difficult to play against and strong. We did our best tonight and we were not successful enough to win. If we look at the situation as it stands, Internazionale and Fenerbaçhe look like qualifying for the next stage and our aim is to go to the UEFA Cup, but mathematically we still have a chance of reaching the next stage. We are sorry we lost the three points tonight, but we are not ashamed as we performed to the best of our ability.
