Lucescu bemoans Shakhtar indiscipline

Mircea Lucescu felt his FC Shakhtar Donetsk side "gave the match away" after holding AC Milan for over an hour, before late strikes proved their undoing.

Mircea Lucescu was disappointed that his FC Shakhtar Donetsk side "gave the match away" after holding AC Milan to a draw for over an hour. Rossoneri counterpart Carlo Ancelotti praised his side's defence and now feels his side are learning how to cope with the duel demands of European and domestic football.

Mircea Lucescu, Shakhtar coach
We produced 65 minutes of good football with Milan having almost no chances while we closed down all the spaces, showed good mobility and movement in the middle of the park while also creating three of four chances that could have brought a goal. We could have scored if we were braver. It looked like the match was heading towards a draw, although we had chances to win. But we made a big mistake on 66 minutes after [Filippo] Inzaghi came on, as [Răzvan] Raţ was too late in moving up with the rest of the defence. The centre-backs shouldn't have allowed Inzaghi to get behind them; I warned them about it before kick-off. It was easy for such an experienced striker to convert the chance.

Our young players do not always stick to our tactical plan because they want to attack more. But every loose ball in the middle of the pitch gives Milan the opportunity to mount an attack and create danger. Apart from the three goals Milan hardly had a shot on goal, but that is Milan - they get everything from nothing. We produced some good attacking moves in the last 25 minutes but it was too little too late. We still have a chance [to qualify] but I would like us to learn something from matches like these and not fall apart after 65 minutes of disciplined football.

Carlo Ancelotti, Milan coach
We played very well defensively and controlled the match but I think Shakhtar could say the same about the first 65 minutes. After conceding Shakhtar had to open up and it was good for us to catch them on the break. Inzaghi was great as he was in the perfect position to apply the final touch. I think Shakhtar are of a higher level than Celtic [FC] but the problem is that it is very difficult to play in Glasgow. Shakhtar have better technical ability and the team play as a whole. The most important thing for us was not to lose and then try to win if possible. We are approaching the level where we can play well both in the Champions League and Serie A. This win should give us a boost to improve our position on the domestic stage.
