CSKA keen on UEFA Cup consolation

PFC CSKA Moskva may have no chance of progressing from Group G but there remain plenty of incentives as they welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Lokomotiv Stadium.

PFC CSKA Moskva have no chance of progressing in the UEFA Champions League but there remain plenty of incentives as they welcome PSV Eindhoven to the Lokomotiv Stadium. Victory would put them level on points with the champions of the Netherlands with one game to play and give them increased hopes of finishing third to claim a place in the UEFA Cup.

• Valeri Gazzaev's side might have hoped they were going to be better placed going into these final two group games following a superb start to their Matchday 4 fixture. After 30 minutes of the match at San Siro they led FC Internazionale Milano 2-0 with goals from Jô and Vágner Love but that was as good as it got for CSKA and they eventually succumbed 4-2 to leave themselves at the foot of the table with just a single point.

• When PSV and CSKA met on 19 September, a last-minute goal from Vágner Love was not enough to earn the visitors from Moscow a point as second-half strikes from summer signings Danko Lazović and Kenneth Perez got PSV off to a winning start.

• Before that fixture, PSV had not met opposition from Russia in UEFA club competition while CSKA had previously faced just two teams from the Netherlands. In the 1996/97 UEFA Cup first round they were beaten 1-0 at home by Feyenoord with the second leg finishing 1-1. In the same competition in 2005/06 they drew 0-0 at SC Heerenveen in the group stage.

• In their last UEFA Champions League outing, PSV were undone by two goals in the space of three first-half minutes against Fenerbahçe SK in Istanbul. It meant they slipped four points behind the Turkish side and face a tough fight to make the next stage of Europe's biggest club competition for the fourth successive season.

• It began to go wrong for caretaker coach Jan Wouters – Ronald Koeman having resigned and taken up a new post at Valencia CF the previous week – and his side when Kazım Kazım's shot was turned into his own net by defender Dirk Marcellis on 28 minutes. Then on the half-hour, Semih Şentürk finished off a fine move to double Fenerbahçe's advantage and that proved to be the end of the scoring.

• The defeat – and a third successive game without scoring – meant PSV have now lost four of their last five away games in the competition and failed to score in any of those defeats. Their only goal in that sequence came in last season's first knockout round when they drew 1-1 away to Arsenal FC to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

• PSV's former coach Guus Hiddink will be an interested bystander for this fixture. Now in charge of Russia, Hiddink guided PSV to the semi-finals in 2004/05 where they were unlucky to lose out on away goals to AC Milan. It was their best showing in the European Champion Clubs' Cup since the 1987/88 season when they lifted the trophy, defeating SL Benfica 6-5 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Two seasons ago they reached the first knockout round and then last season reached the quarter-finals before losing in both legs to eventual finalists Liverpool FC.

• In the other game in the group, Inter play host to Fenerbahçe.
