It was advantage FC Basel 1893 after the Swiss champions scored an away goal in holding IFK Göteborg to a 1-1 draw in Sweden.
Level pegging
Benjamin Huggel did the damage for Basel, breaking the deadlock after 26 minutes of this UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie. That was reward for Basel's early dominance, but Göteborg hit back with an equaliser from Thomas Olsson six minutes later. Either team might have clinched victory but the contest was left open going into next Wednesday's second leg in Switzerland.
No decision
Huggel struck with a back-post header from Jürgen Gjasula's corner to silence the crowd in Gothenburg. However, the lead was only fleeting as Jakob Johansson set up Olsson to restore parity. IFK were then in the ascendant yet could not find a second goal. Likewise Basel had nothing to show for their late pressure as David Abraham, Gjasula and Huggel failed to register with chances.
