Jesualdo Ferreira, Porto coach
We knew exactly what we needed to do to win and were simply outstanding during the opening 20 or 25 minutes. We managed to score two goals and should have had a third. In my opinion there were two or three reasons for Fenerbahçe getting back in the game: we were a bit dazzled with their display; a little bit afraid about our own two-goal advantage; and finally, after 25 minutes some of my players were already tired. It was crucial to take all the points though, especially as we have failed to win the first game in the group stage in recent years. I'd also like to point out that five of my starting lineup had never featured in the Champions League before. We are building a team and have to be delighted with this victory. My players were amazing.
Luis Aragonés, Fenerbahçe coach
We lost the game in the first 13 minutes. We had talked before the match about how Porto would play at a high tempo right from the kick-off. I was therefore very surprised with the way such an experienced team like Fenerbahçe conceded so much possession during the first 13 minutes and I think it was decisive for the outcome of the match. We were on top in the second half and we had several chances to equalise but when you are not able to score you normally concede a goal – and so it proved. I have many injured players and that is costing us a lot. I want to reassure the fans that we are on the right track. We didn't start well both in the Turkish league and in the Champions League but the league has just started and tonight we were so close to getting a draw.
