Panathinaikos FC coach Henk ten Cate suggested it might be time to "start praying to the Greek gods" after Hugo Almeida struck seven minutes from time to earn Werder Bremen a share of the spoils and leave the Dutchman's charges rooted to the foot of Group B. After a third successive draw, their German opponents are third and, while not yet looking for divine inspiration, Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said it was a "good sign" that his side recovered from going 2-1 down.
Henk ten Cate, Panathinaikos coach
We are disappointed. We were the better team tonight and deserved to win. However, we demonstrated that we have a strong team ethic and it was the best performance that Panathinaikos have put on since I came here. The team deserve much more credit than they are getting. I don't want to point the finger at our defensive performance because we defend as a team and we attack as a team. In the second half I told my players to charge forward, because Bremen were only really posing a threat when the ball was in the air. In order to afford giving away chances, we had to play away from our own box. They have six players over 1.90m, while our tallest player is 1.84m.
Luck was not on our side. We hit the crossbar and at 2-2 we had two fantastic chances. The players are obviously disappointed with the result but I am proud of these guys for the performance they put in today. They should be given time because this is a very good team. Given the circumstances, we did very well today. We have still three matches left and with nine points at stake anything can happen. Hopefully we will be luckier from now on. Perhaps I should start praying to the Greek gods.
Thomas Schaaf, Bremen coach
We scored the opener against the run of play and were able to build on that. Panathinaikos started to put pressure on us and we couldn't get forward as much as we wanted. In the second half we had more chances and had to start taking risks. It's a good sign that we were able to react after going 2-1 down, to get back into the game. Given our chances in the latter stages we could have won, but we can live with the point. I can detect an improvement in our defensive performance, but again we failed to avoid some individual errors. It is still a long time until the match against Panathinaikos in Bremen. In between, we have league engagements to focus on.
