Consistency bearing fruit for Klinsmann

FC Bayern München coach Jürgen Klinsmann insisted his side have the ability and form to match any side left in the UEFA Champions League while Claude Puel blamed missed chances for Olympique Lyonnais' 3-2 defeat.

FC Bayern München coach Jürgen Klinsmann insisted his side have the ability and form to match any side left in the UEFA Champions League after a 3-2 victory at Olympique Lyonnais allowed them to wrest top spot in Group F from the French side. Home coach Claude Puel was disappointed at the number of chances his side spurned and the thought of having to play the second leg of the next phase away from home as a result of tonight's setback.

Jürgen Klinsmann, Bayern coach
I am totally satisfied with this victory which allowed us to finish first in the group. That was our wish before the game. The first half was good, the second more difficult. We allowed Lyon to stage a comeback, backed by the great support of their crowd. Michael Rensing helped us on several occasions and we are very happy with his development. He's becoming more and more calm, more concentrated and he performed extremely well tonight. The way we've played against Fiorentina and Bucharest has been impressive. Our team has improved. Our objective was to show that we are a first-class team and for the past two-and-a-half months our results have been quite consistent. We have reached an interesting level but I think we can do better. We can consider ourselves on the same level as the best European teams. Our next opponents? It doesn't matter – we are full of confidence.

Claude Puel, Lyon coach
We made an interesting start to the first half. We had the first chances but did not manage to profit from them, then they had three shots on target and scored three goals – that's tough. It was quite a strange game and tonight we have been unlucky. We had the feeling we could score at any time but they were more efficient. During the second half, we came back with ambition and the will to win that half. I see on the statistics that we had [21] shots and Bayern only seven so we had the chances to score. I must say congratulations to my players. Being 3-0 down and almost making a comeback is great. We have shown throughout this competition that we have qualities and extraordinary mental resources. In the next round, playing the second leg away is always a disadvantage and at this level of competition every team is dangerous.
