Roberto Di Matteo, interim Chelsea manager
There were two great teams on the pitch. We were in such a difficult position before the game and we knew it would take a lot to go through.
The performance of this whole team was outstanding – not just the senior players, but the collective performance. The experienced players are used to playing these games though. David Luiz couldn't walk at the end, John Terry had cramp. Petr Čech made some great saves, Didier [Drogba], Fernando [Torres] – everyone tonight.
It meant to a lot to the club to be able to still play in the Champions League. Everybody was very happy and delighted; you could see what it meant to the players and I am delighted with the performance. I've had some great nights but this will probably go down in club history. With how the players performed, tonight, they showed passion and that they care about the team and the supporters. It will give us a big boost for the rest of the season.
We knew that we needed a big performance. We tried to go back to basics, to be solid and we were confident with our quality we could score. We showed passion, quality and team spirit – and that's what we needed to go through. [When Napoli scored] mentally we reacted very well because it could have been a big blow but I was always confident we would score another goal and maybe go to penalties. Fortunately we managed to get the fourth goal, which I was very pleased about, and get through to the next round.
Walter Mazzarri, Napoli coach
Of course it's a big disappointment for us, especially the way we lost. But I'm happy with my team's performance in the competition overall, it has been a great achievement making it this far. We paid for lack of experience tonight and many things went wrong, but we have a young team and we can learn from this experience.
Chelsea don't concede often at home but we scored one and could have had one or two more. We probably had more chances tonight than in the first leg, when we scored more goals. We lost a key player in Maggio, and it was a big blow; we immediately conceded a goal with a cross coming from the position he was playing. Chelsea played well and deserved their goals, but we also deserved to score more. Our forwards always work hard for the team, I just think we lacked the experience at this level to be as cool in front of goal as we usually are in less important matches. Our great players are still very young, so that is normal.
Chelsea did really well and were clinical – they took advantage of the chances they had and we did not. But I'm proud of my players and this is a lesson we need to take going forward.
We should have been more careful defensively, but we came up against a team full of champions. But Napoli should be proud tonight.
