Basel braced for Bayern power show

FC Bayern München's run of 11 wins in 12 UEFA Champions League home matches suggests FC Basel 1893 will have their work cut out despite a 1-0 first-leg victory.

FC Bayern München welcome back former youth coach Heiko Vogel as he brings his FC Basel 1893 team to Bavaria for the second leg of the clubs' round of 16 tie.

• Although Bayern have a 100% home record in three games against Swiss visitors, Basel travel to Germany with a 1-0 lead thanks to Valentin Stocker's 86th-minute goal at St. Jakob-Park.

Previous meetings
• Vogel was assistant to Thorsten Fink, another Bayern old boy, when Basel lost twice to the Bundesliga side in last term's group stage. Bayern won 2-1 away on 28 September 2010, Bastian Schweinsteiger scoring an 89th-minute winner having cancelled out Alexander Frei's first-half opener from the penalty spot.

• Louis van Gaal's Bayern prevailed again in Munich, Franck Ribéry (two) and Anatoliy Tymoshchuk scoring in a 3-0 victory that confirmed Basel's elimination.

• The lineups for that second meeting on 8 December 2010 were:
Bayern: Kraft, Lahm, Tymoshchuk, Breno, Contento, Van Bommel, Kroos (Altıntop 68), Müller, Schweinsteiger, Ribéry, Gomez.
Basel: Costanzo, Inkoom, Abraham, Ferati, Safari, Shaqiri (Tembo 76), Cabral (Almerares 55), Yapi, Stocker, Frei, Streller (Xhaka 46).

• Last season was the clubs' first encounter in UEFA competition though Bayern did face a Basel XI in the 1962/63 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Bayern won the first leg 3-0 and advanced after the second leg was not played.

Match background
• Bayern are appearing at this stage for the fourth consecutive campaign, while Basel are in the UEFA Champions League last 16 for the second time. They reached the quarter-finals of the 1973/74 European Champion Clubs' Cup.

• Bayern have won 11 of their last 12 UEFA Champions League home outings, recording four straight victories this season including a 2-0 play-off success against FC Zürich.

• Basel were undefeated on their travels in the group stage, holding Manchester United FC and SL Benfica and beating FC Oţelul Galaţi. Their record in Germany is less positive with one win, two draws and three defeats.

• The Swiss side have won the first leg at home in 17 UEFA competition ties and have recorded 13 aggregate victories. When they have prevailed 1-0 at home first time out they have triumphed overall on three out of four occasions.

• Jupp Heynckes was in charge when Bayern faced Neuchâtel Xamax FC in the 1987/88 European Cup second round, losing 2-1 in Switzerland before a 2-0 victory in Munich.

• That was one of eight occasions in UEFA competition in which Bayern have recovered from an away first-leg defeat to win the tie; they have  suffered ten defeats including seven in the last eight contests.

• Bayern have won four of five ties after losing 1-0 away first. The sole defeat came in the most recent contest, AC Milan going down 2-1 in Munich in the 1989/90 European Cup semi-finals but triumphing on away goals.

Team ties
• Vogel coached Thomas Müller, Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber, Toni Kroos and Diego Contento during his time in Bayern's youth system from 1998 to 2007, which featured spells overseeing the Under-10, U13, U15 and U17 teams.

• Frei played for Borussia Dortmund from 2006 to 2009. He appeared in their 2-1 German Cup final loss to Bayern in 2008 and that same year suffered a 5-0 Bundesliga away defeat by the Bavarian side, but did score twice in Dortmund's 3-2 league win in January 2007.

• Ivica Olić scored for Hamburger SV against Basel in a 1-1 draw in Germany in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup group stage.

• Markus Steinhöfer began his career in Bayern's youth ranks and played for their reserves from 2003 to 2006. Marco Streller had four seasons in Germany at VfB Stuttgart from 2004 to 2007, playing alongside Lahm and Mario Gomez.

• Streller hit Switzerland's goal in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Germany in February 2007. Lahm, Schweinsteiger and Gomez were in the opposition lineup, with Gomez scoring.

• Gomez struck twice more when Germany beat Frei and Huggel's Switzerland 4-0 in a St. Jakob-Park friendly in March 2008. Lahm and Schweinsteiger were also in Germany's team.

• Scott Chipperfield's Australia lost 4-0 to Germany at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with Müller among the scorers.
