• Joined local club Coritiba as a youngster and made 81 league appearances over three years, scoring twice.
• Won the FIFA U-20 World Cup with Brazil in the United Arab Emirates in 2003 and was an unused member of the senior team's Copa América triumph in Peru the following year.
• Joined Sevilla midway through the 2004/05 campaign, making his Liga debut against Barcelona on 29 January 2005 – a 4-0 home defeat – but retained his place and went on to become a key man in a successful run under coach Juande Ramos.
• Made 14 appearances in Sevilla's 2005/06 UEFA Cup triumph, scoring three goals, and 11 in the following season's successful trophy defence, his one goal opening the scoring in the final against RCD Espanyol at Hampden Park.
• Moved to Barcelona in July 2010 for a fee that could rise to €13.5m and ended a season in which he was a bit-part player as an unused substitute in the UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United FC.
