Michael Carrick's early goal gave Manchester United FC a winning start to their Group H campaign but they had to work hard to overcome a spirited Galatasaray AŞ side at Old Trafford.
Carrick's seventh-minute goal, his first in the UEFA Champions League for three years, proved the difference on a night when Nani had a second-half penalty saved and two Galatasaray shots came back off the woodwork. It was an intriguing contest and not the comfortable victory that Carrick's opener promised.
It was a good opening game. Three points are very important, especially when you look at what happened to us last season. We were more solid at the back, and all the chances fell to us.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager
We are sad about the defeat. The result is not positive but it made us happy to see the Galatasaray spirit on the pitch. We were denied by the woodwork on three occasions.

Fatih Terim, Galatasaray coach

Manchster United do just enough to win as they start out on a record 17th consecutive UEFA Champions League group stage campaign. It was anything but simple though, despite Michael Carrick's early goal, as Galatasaray went close numerous times, Nordin Amrabat, Hamit Altıntop and Selçuk İnan all grazing the woodwork.
