A first-half goal from Danny proved decisive as FC Zenit St Petersburg overcame AC Milan in Group C and qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
With the hosts already assured of second spot in the section behind Málaga CF, Massimiliano Allegri opted to leave the in-form Stephan El Shaarawy on the bench. And with the Rossoneri somewhat blunted in attack as a consequence, Zenit took control and landed the telling blow ten minutes before the break when captain Danny stroked in a shot from inside the penalty area.
We conceded a goal that we shouldn't have conceded, it was the only chance they had in the first half. We had our chances and we are sorry that we lost.

Massimiliano Allegri, Milan coach
I want to congratulate our guys because they played well tonight. It was a very difficult match because of all the tension. There was a lot at stake.

Luciano Spalletti, Zenit coach

A great win for the Russian side. Their first-half goal enabled them to sit back in the second half and that they did as Milan poured forward but never really looked like scoring. A underwhelming performance from the home team.
