Real Madrid CF finished their UEFA Champions League Group D campaign with a flourish as José Callejón scored twice against an AFC Ajax side who now move into the UEFA Europa League.
With José Mourinho's team already knowing they would come second to Borussia Dortmund, Ajax might have harboured hopes of improving on a run of five successive defeats by Madrid, in which they had conceded 16 goals. Such aspirations were dashed within 13 minutes as Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid ahead, Callejón adding two more either side of a fine Kaká strike to leave Ajax with only Derk Boerrigter's consolation – although Manchester City FC's loss in Dortmund means their European campaign will continue in the spring.
We have to respect everyone. We play against tough opponents. In this year's group of death we have come second. We wanted to be first but it has not been possible.

José Mourinho, Madrid coach
We can be proud of the fact we came third in the group and can continue playing in UEFA Europa League. Many people did not expect us to achieve that at the start.

Frank de Boer, Ajax coach

An imperious first-half performance from Real Madrid in which Cristiano Ronaldo and José Callejón scored set up the victory. Ajax were better in the second half as Derk Boerrigter struck back after Kaká’s beautiful strike although Callejón had the last word with his second.
