Galatasaray AŞ will look to build on their strong finish to the UEFA Champions League group stage when they host FC Schalke 04 in the first leg of their round of 16 tie in Istanbul.

• After losing their first two Group H fixtures, Fatih Terim's men finished with three straight wins to snatch second place in the section and will now bid to make it four in a row in their first ever meeting with Schalke.

• This tie marks a UEFA Champions League debut for Jens Keller, the man brought in by Schalke to replace Huub Stevens as coach in December. Keller, who has played and coached in the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League, has never faced Turkish opposition before.

• Schalke have lost just one of their last nine European away fixtures, including victories at Olympiacos FC and Arsenal FC en route to topping Group B before Christmas.

Match background
• Galatasaray are hoping to reach the European Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2001 – and the fifth time overall – but will have to improve on their recent efforts against German visitors.

• This is Galatasaray's 12th home meeting with Bundesliga opposition and they are seeking just their third victory having won none of their last five games against German sides in Istanbul. Their overall home record against teams from Germany is W2 D7 L2.

• On the last occasion Galatasaray hosted a Bundesliga outfit they surrendered a two-goal lead to succumb 3-2 to Hamburger SV in the second leg of their 2008/09 UEFA Cup round of 16 tie – a result that left them eliminated 4-3 on aggregate. Their last home win was a 1-0 success against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup second round. Their last away victory came at a Hertha BSC Berlin side including Schalke's Raffael in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, Milan Baroš scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.

• Galatasaray overcame 1. FC Magdeburg, the first German side they ever faced, on the toss of a coin after three 1-1 draws in the preliminary round of the 1964/65 European Cup Winners' Cup.

• Hamit Altıntop, who is facing his old club, was in the Schalke side that first met Turkish opposition in the UEFA Champions League, drawing 3-3 at Fenerbahçe SK, then winning 2-0 at home in the 2005/06 group stage.

• Schalke's only other trip to Turkey brought another 3-3 draw at Trabzonspor AŞ in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup second round, a result that secured a 4-3 aggregate success for a side who went on to lift the trophy.

• Schalke have reached the quarter-finals twice in recent campaigns – in 2010/11, when they were semi-finalists, and in 2007/08. Their only other run to the last eight was back in 1958/59.

Team ties
• As a Turkish international, Terim appeared in five matches against Germany, losing four of them beginning with a 5-0 home friendly defeat in 1975. The only exception was a 0-0 home draw in April 1979 in UEFA European Championship qualifying. He also appeared against East Germany in 1978 FIFA World Cup qualifying, Turkey posting a home defeat and an away draw.

• In his first spell as Galatasaray coach Terim lost home and away to Borussia Dortmund in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League group stage. However, his team fared better against Bundesliga opponents in 1999/2000. In that season's UEFA Champions League they drew 2-2 at home to Hertha BSC Berlin and then beat them 4-1 away to secure third place in their group and entry into the UEFA Cup, where they defeated Dortmund in the fourth round – winning 2-0 away for an identical aggregate success – en route to lifting the trophy.

• As Turkey coach Terim lost out to Christoph Metzelder's Germany in the UEFA EURO 2008 semi-finals. Hamit Altıntop, Hakan Balta, Sabri Sarıoğlu and Gökhan Zan all featured as Turkey went down 3-2 in Basel.

• Hamit Altıntop was born in Gelsenkirchen and played for Schalke between 2003 and 2007, making 113 league appearances and scoring eight goals before moving on to FC Bayern München.

• Hakan Balta, Engin Baytar, Ceyhun Gülselam and Furkan Özçal were also born in Germany. Hakan Balta started his professional career in Hertha's reserve team and Engin Baytar did likewise at DSC Arminia Bielefeld while Ceyhun came through the youth ranks at SpVgg Unterhaching, spending two seasons in their first team between 2006 and 2008.

• Didier Drogba scored Chelsea FC's equalising goal and then converted the winning penalty when they overcame FC Bayern München in last May's UEFA Champions League final – his last appearance in the competition. Drogba has struck five goals in eight appearances against Bundesliga opposition, including one in Chelsea's 2-0 home win against Schalke in the 2007/08 group stage. He also appeared in the 0-0 return draw in Gelsenkirchen.

• Wesley Sneijder was in the FC Internazionale Milano side deposed as European champions by Schalke in the 2010/11 quarter-finals, losing 5-2 at home and 2-1 in Gelsenkirchen. Sneijder had helped Inter beat Bayern in the 2010 final. Sneijder and Huntelaar, a half-time substitute, were in the Netherlands side beaten 2-1 by Germany in the UEFA EURO 2012 group stage.

• Benedikt Höwedes appeared as a substitute in Germany's 3-1 win at the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying. Sabri, Hamit Altıntop, Hakan Balta, Umut Bulut, Selçuk İnan and Burak Yılmaz all played for Turkey, Hakan Balta scoring the hosts' goal.

• Höwedes also came off the bench when Germany beat Fernando Muslera's Uruguay 2-1 in a May 2011 friendly.

• Christian Fuchs faced Turkey's Galatasaray contingent in an Austria side beaten 2-0 in Istanbul in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying and held 0-0 at home.

• Ciprian Marica played in Romania's 1-0 victory over Turkey in FIFA World Cup qualifying in Istanbul in October 2012. Hamit Altıntop, Semih Kaya, Emre Çolak and Umut Bulut were on the losing team.

• Kyriakos Papadopoulos was in the Greece side beaten 2-1 by Milan Baroš's Czech Republic in the UEFA EURO 2012 group stage.

• Teemu Pukki scored in Finland's 3-2 friendly win against Turkey last May. Burak Yılmaz hit both Turkey goals in a match also featuring Hamit Altıntop, Umut Bulut, Semih Kaya and Yekta Kurtuluş.

• Klaas-Jan Huntelaar struck the 52nd-minute winner when a Netherlands side including Ibrahim Afellay overcame Turkey 1-0 in a November 2010 friendly. Hamit Altıntop, Umut Bulut, Selçuk İnan, Burak Yılmaz and Sabri started for Turkey with Engin Baytar and Yekta appearing as substitutes.

• Tomáš Ujfaluši played for Hamburger SV between 2000 and 2004, making 105 Bundesliga appearances. He faced Schalke in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round with Club Atlético de Madrid, losing 1-0 away but winning the second leg 4-0 in Spain.

• Johan Elmander scored Sweden's third goal when they wiped out a four-goal deficit to draw 4-4 with Germany in a World Cup qualifier in Berlin in October.

• Nordin Amrabat and Afellay were team-mates at PSV Eindhoven between 2008 and 2011. Afellay appeared in PSV's 2-0 home defeat of Galatasaray in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage.

• Jefferson Farfán was in that PSV side and also featured when they won 2-1 in Istanbul in that same campaign. Farfán faced Galatasaray's rivals Fenerbahçe SK four times during his PSV career, losing on both visits to Istanbul but scoring in a 2-0 home success in the 2005/06 group stage.

• Tranquillo Barnetto helped Bayer 04 Leverkusen eliminate Galatasaray 5-1 on aggregate in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 32 but was also in the Switzerland side eliminated from UEFA EURO 2008 on home soil after a 2-1 defeat by Turkey.

• Joel Matip and Dany Nounkeu have played together for Cameroon.
