Real Madrid CF took a significant step towards a record 24th European Cup semi-final as José Mourinho's side proved too strong for Galatasaray AŞ.
With visiting coach Fatih Terim admitting a defeat for his team would cause no surprises, Madrid moved quickly to justify that opinion and took the lead nine minutes into this quarter-final – Cristiano Ronaldo chipping in his 18th goal in in his last 16 UEFA Champions League appearances. Karim Benzema doubled the nine-time winners' advantage shortly before the half-hour and his second-half replacement Gonzalo Higuaín headed a third 17 minutes from time.
If we score a goal [in the second leg] they have to score five, but in football I have seen so many incredible things that nothing can surprise me.

José Mourinho, Madrid coach
My players did their best. Despite all our hard work and training, we did not expect to concede goals like that. You need to minimise mistakes in these games.

Fatih Terim, Galatasaray coach

An ideal outcome for José Mourinho. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuaín got the goals to give Madrid a firm grip on this tie. A tough trip to Istanbul awaits on Tuesday, but the hosts will feel they have enough of a cushion to be confident of taking a third consecutive semi-final place.
