There was no surprise in Istanbul as Real Madrid CF confirmed their progress to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, but at least Galatasaray AŞ exited the competition with their heads held high.
Cristiano Ronaldo's early goal appeared to have doused any lingering chance of an improbable home comeback, extending Madrid's aggregate lead to 4-0, but Fatih Terim's team made a real fight of it in a thrilling second half when Emmanuel Eboué, Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba all found the net. Briefly Galatasaray had hope but Madrid regrouped and Ronaldo's late second goal ensured a 5-3 aggregate win – a direct repeat of the sides' 2001 quarter-final encounter.
We could not knock Real Madrid out of the competition but I think we deserve the respect of the whole world. We need to hold our heads high.

Fatih Terim, Galatasaray coach
Now we have a semi-final to play against a great team. It will be hard but now is the time to enjoy ourselves and not to be nervous or afraid.

José Mourinho, Madrid coach

Galatasaray 3-2 Madrid (agg: 3-5) A brilliant game finishes, bookended by two neat Cristiano Ronaldo goals which really killed the Galatasaray chances. The hosts did outstandingly to make a game of it with three goals in quick succession after the break, but despite the scare, Madrid had done enough in the first leg to see them into the last four.
