Fenerbahçe SK were indebted to a 95th-minute penalty equaliser from substitute Cristian which has dented FC Salzburg's chances of progress in this UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Roger Schmidt's team looked set to register a crucial first-leg lead when Alan lobbed in after 68 minutes at the Stadion Salzburg but that was counting without Cristian's intervention deep into stoppage time. The Brazilian midfielder slotted home a last-gasp spot-kick to increase the Salzburg workload in the second instalment of this meeting between last season's Austrian Bundesliga and Turkish Super Lig runners-up.

Prior to that, Brazilian forward Alan appeared set to take the plaudits for his cool chipped finish over goalkeeper Volkan Demirel after he had broken into the Fenerbahçe box to take advantage of Kevin Kampl's superb pass. However, a penalty awarded after Andreas Ulmer blocked Moussa Sow's attempted right-wing cross resulted in late heartache for Salzburg, with Cristian sending goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi the wrong way from the spot.

Ersun Yanal's side – UEFA Europa League semi-finalists last term – will hope to feel the benefit of that away goal next Tuesday, 6 August, in Istanbul.
