Andrei Finonchenko and Sergei Khizhnichenko scored as FC Shakhter Karagandy defeated Celtic FC and moved to within 90 minutes of becoming the first Kazakh club to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Shakhter captain Finonchenko punished the visitors' failure to deal with a long throw 12 minutes into this play-off first leg. Celtic, who famously beat FC Barcelona en route to reaching the round of 16 last term, hit the woodwork before the break and created openings in the second half, but Khizhnichenko's 77th-minute header leaves them with it all to do in Glasgow next Wednesday.

    The final whistle is blown.
The lowest ranked team in the play-offs have recorded a memorable win, as strikes from Andrei Finonchenko and Sergei Khizhnichenko have given Shakhter a two-goal lead to take to Celtic Park next Wednesday. The hosts were excellent, and more than matched their fancied opponents, who have it all to do in the second leg after being kept scoreless.

The lead is doubled! It appeared Finonchenko had been denied when his effort was well blocked by Steven Mouyokolo, but Gediminas Vičius drove the loose ball back into the box and the No91 is there to nod past Fraser Forster.
