Abbiati gives Milan top marks for PSV win

"A great team effort" and a lucky save made the difference for Christian Abbiati as his AC Milan side ousted PSV Eindhoven, Jeffrey Bruma conceding: "We lacked Milan's killer instinct."

AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati praised "a great team effort" after the Rossoneri defeated PSV Eindhoven 3-0 in the return leg of their play-off to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage. The No1 made several important saves at San Siro, especially one to deny Georginio Wijnaldum early in the second half.  "That was the luckiest one," the 36-year-old told UEFA.com. That save was the turning point in the tie according to PSV defender Jeffrey Bruma. "If we had made it 1-1 when we had the chance it would have been a different game," he said.

Christian Abbiati, Milan goalkeeper
It was a difficult game against a very good side who sold a few important players but can now count on other players who are just as talented. It was a great team effort by Milan – we proved we can fight hard when needed. It was important to respond after the bad defeat in Verona in the league, and we proved that it was not the real Milan on Saturday. I made a few saves tonight, the luckiest one was certainly the one early in the second half when their captain had a great opportunity to equalise.

Mattia De Sciglio, Milan defender
We are very satisfied because it was very important to win in front of our fans for many reasons. I'm happy to have resumed playing after an injury and to have helped the team to achieve this important result. For me it's not important to play on the right or on the left, as long as I can help the team. I played on the left behind Stephan El Shaarawy tonight and I have always a good understanding with him – we even went close to scoring when he hit the bar from my pass.

Jeffrey Bruma, PSV defender
It was a bad result. I think we played OK – not our best game but we have done quite well. Their early goal was a shame for us. After that we had a chance to come back but we didn't score. We lacked the killer instinct that Milan have and that's why they won. I think experience made the difference. They had four or five chances and scored three goals – this is the killer instinct that we don't have yet.

It was a good experience and we had a chance to go through as well. In the first game we were no worse than Milan and also tonight I think if we had made it 1-1 when we had the chance it would have been a different game. Then they made 2-0 and the game was nearly over. Obviously tonight we are a bit angry but now we have to go on with the Europa League and give our best there.

Ola Toivonen, PSV forward
We had a great opportunity to make it 1-1 early in the second half and after a few minutes they made it 2-0 – it's very difficult to score two goals at San Siro. Abbiati is a good keeper but I think Milan were the better team in general – they were sharper in front of goal and I think that made the difference. We are a young team with not much experience.

It's a nice experience to play against Milan but we wanted to go through. It didn't happen and now we can only look forward and play in the other competition. I have got used to playing in the Europa League every year with PSV and it would be nice to try something else like the Champions League but it didn't happen. Now we have to forget this and look forward.
