David Moyes enjoyed a winning start in the UEFA Champions League as his Manchester United FC side earned a comfortable 4-2 victory over Group A rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

Wayne Rooney set the ball rolling after 22 minutes and although Simon Rolfes equalised early in the second half, United reasserted their supremacy with goals from Robin van Persie, Rooney again and Antonio Valencia. Ömer Toprak lashed in a close-range second for Leverkusen but by then Moyes was already assured a debut European victory at the club – something only two United managers before him, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson, had achieved.

Reaction

We did a lot of good things tonight and it was a good job. I thought the players knew what they had to do and they went about it well.

United scored their second and third goals just when we looked to be building up more pressure. We could have caused them some problems then.

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
An excellent reception from the Old Trafford crowd at full-time, as Manchester United begin their UEFA Champions League with a degree of panache. And that is surely their most compelling performance of the season so far to date too - in all competitions.

    Valencia (Man. United) scores!
Antonio Valencia finishes a clinical counterattack instigated by Robin van Persie. Wayne Rooney's well-timed through ball takes two Leverkusen defenders out of the game and finds Valencia in an abundance of room, where the winger makes no mistake from close range.
