A burst of three goals in ten second-half minutes swept Manchester City FC to victory at FK Viktoria Plzeň that gave the Premier League club the ideal start to Group D.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini turned 60 the day before the game, and his players presented him with the perfect gift in the Czech Republic. Though frustrated in the first half, Pellegrini's new side cut loose after the break with Edin Džeko, Yaya Touré and Sergio Agüero all finding the net in quick succession to inflict Plzeň's first defeat in 15 competitive games this season.

Reaction

We imagined it differently. We knew City's quality and it certainly showed on the pitch but I think our mistakes made it easier for them.

In the first half we had chances to score, but in the second half we played really well. We played with movement and we were able to create space.

Minute By Minute

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
An exceptional second-half performance from City showed the quality that Plzeň are up against at this level. Goals from Edin Džeko, Yaya Touré and Sergio Agüero got City off to the perfect start as they look to improve on last season's showing, where they finished bottom of their UEFA Champions League group. Manuel Pelligrini will be delighted.

Tecl (in) - Bakoš (out) (Plzeň)
  • Substitution

Negredo (in) - Džeko (out) (Man. City)
Álvaro Negredo comes on to make his first UEFA Champions League appearance replacing Edin Džeko, who has been impressive tonight.

Javi García (in) - Y. Touré (out) (Man. City)
  • Substitution
    67
Milner (in) - Jesús Navas (out) (Man. City)
A substitition that perhaps indicates Manuel Pellegrini is relatively content to keep the score at 3-0 as the ever-attacking Jesús Navas is replaced by the more defensively able James Milner.
