A Kostas Mitroglou hat-trick helped Olympiacos FC rack up their first UEFA Champions League Group C points at RSC Anderlecht's expense, leaving the hosts ruing a series of missed openings.

The Belgian champions created the bulk of the chances but paid for their inability to match Mitroglou's potency, the forward first displaying his goalscoring instinct on 17 minutes with a stabbed finish. Anderlecht's Aleksandar Mitrović had a penalty saved before two fine second-half Mitroglou strikes – completing the first hat-trick by a Greek player in the competition – sealed things for Míchel's men ahead of the matchday three trip to SL Benfica.

Match in 5

  • Olympiacos claim first Group C win thanks to Mitroglou hat-trick
  • Mitroglou's first is 450th Anderlecht conceded in UEFA competition
  • Mitrović misses first-half penalty for hosts at 1-0
  • Mitroglou strikes twice in 16 second-half minutes to seal win
  • Olympiacos visit Benfica next, Anderlecht host PSG

Reaction

The difference was we did not convert the chances and they had three chances and scored three goals. It might sound strange but I am proud of my players.

We wanted this win so badly and we went for it from the first minute. It is not important if I score help someone else to score goals just as long as Olympiacos win.

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
David Crossan, Constant Vanden Stock Stadium: Kostas Mitroglou showed Anderlecht how to finish here. Had the hosts had anybody with the hat-trick hero's composure in front of goal then there might have been a very different outcome, so many opportunities did John van den Brom's vibrant young side create.

    Mitroglou (Olympiacos) scores!
An unbelievable goal from Kostas Mitroglou to complete his third hat-trick of the season and effectively win this game for Olympiacos. David Fuster bursts forward on the counter before sliding the ball to Mitroglou who drags the ball from left foot to right before unleashing a sublime curling shot into the top corner. Beautiful goal.

Domínguez (in) - Saviola (out) (Olympiacos)
It is a fine evening's work from Javier Saviola having set-up the first goal and been a constant threat on the break for Olympiacos.
