Ten-man FC Zenit and FK Austria Wien gained their first points in UEFA Champions League Group G as they played out a goalless draw in St Petersburg.

Despite the dismissal of Axel Witsel for a challenge on Florian Mader a minute before the break, the home side continued to dominate possession for long periods. Austria Wien, excellently marshalled throughout by captain and defender Manuel Ortlechner, grew in confidence as the second half wore on but created little of note themselves.

Match in 5

  • Zenit's Witsel sent off in St Petersburg stalemate
  • Hulk hits the woodwork in first half
  • Hosiner clips a post from range before the half-time
  • Both sides winless in Group G
  • Spalletti's side still unbeaten at home this season

Reaction

It is six matches, and we have to collect more points than two other opponents. I still think that we are equal to this task.

Luciano Spalletti, Zenit coach

Luciano Spalletti, Zenit coach

Our performance was good even before Zenit had a player sent off. Our defensive performance was solid, in the end the 0-0 draw is a fair result.

All over in St Petersburg. Axel Witsel's sending off took the sting out of Zenit, but Austria Wien more than matched the home side, with captain Manuel Ortlechner proving to be a rock in defence. Hulk hit the woodwork in the first half, but the Russian side ultimately came up short.
