FC Zenit became the first Russian side to win at FC Porto as the Premier League champions overcame their Portuguese counterparts thanks to Aleksandr Kerzhakov's late goal.

Porto were a player short for most of the match after Hector Herrera's early red card and looked as if they might hold out for a point, but substitute Kerzhakov's header four minutes from time meant Luciano Spalletti's team moved above their hosts in Group G ahead of the reverse fixture in a fortnight.

Reaction

I'm not happy with the result but we showed a lot of solidarity and we improved in many aspects even with ten men. I'm proud of what the team did and we even created chances to score.

Hulk was the player that gave them more problems, he was everywhere, dribbling from the right, setting up [Aleksandr] Kerzhakov for the goal, he was crucial for us.

Minute By Minute

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
After losing Hector Herrera, on his UEFA Champions League start, to two yellow cards within six minutes of kick-off, Porto came agonisingly close to holding on for a hard-fought point here. But Hulk returned to haunt his former club with a pinpoint cross that allowed substitute Aleksandr Kerzhakov to head the winner from close range with just four minutes remaining.

    Kerzhakov (Zenit) scores!
The away fans are sent into raptures as an inch-perfect cross from Hulk allows the substitute to get a run on Danilo, and the 30-year-old nods in.
