Samuel Eto'o scored his first UEFA Champions League goals for Chelsea FC to drive the London side to a three-point lead in Group E with their 100th European victory.

Eto'o's first was a triumph for anticipation and opportunism as FC Schalke 04 goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand dallied over his attempted clearance, allowing the striker to divert it into an empty net. The second recalled all the Cameroonian's best moments in the colours of FC Barcelona and FC Internazionale Milano as his shot arrowed into the far corner while Demba Ba's first in the competition put the icing on Chelsea's cake with seven minutes remaining.

Match in 5

  • Chelsea go three points clear in Group E
  • Eto'o double put Blues in charge
  • Ba rounds off scoring with 83rd-minute volley
  • Schalke suffer second 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in a fortnight
  • Mourinho's men a point away from knockout phase

Reaction

The first 15 minutes were difficult, we were lucky as they did not score from some good chances. After that we played very well. We are almost there.

I am extremely upset. Our second half was poor but our start was fantastic. We had everything under control, then conceded an unfortunate lead.

    The final whistle is blown.
Jack Lang, Stamford Bridge: The scoreline flatters them a touch, but it would be difficult to begrudge Chelsea the victory on the balance of play. Samuel Eto'o's opener may have been fortuitous in the extreme, but the ensuing two goals – scored by Eto'o and substitute Demba Ba – epitomised what was a confident, clinical display from the home side. José Mourinho will be increasingly confident of securing progress to the knockout stages.

    Ba (Chelsea) scores!
The forward does excellently to control a long ball forward with his chest, which Willian taps to Frank Lampard. The midfielder dinks a pass over the top, and Ba does very well to volley in on the turn.
