Ten-man Madrid make sure of knockout place

The ten men of Real Madrid CF responded to a slow start to beat Galatasaray AŞ comfortably for a second time and confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 as Group B winners.

The 26th-minute dismissal of Sergio Ramos provided the unlikely spark for a previously lacklustre home side, Carlo Ancelotti's charges reacting by taking the lead through a Gareth Bale free-kick. Galatasaray – still in contention to join Madrid in the knockout stages despite this second heavy defeat by the Spanish club – levelled immediately through Umut Bulut's strike but Madrid took control thereafter, second-half goals from Álvaro Arbeloa, Ángel Di María and Isco securing the points.

Looking to make light of the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo – scorer of eight goals in the competition this season – Madrid tried to impose their 4-2-3-1 formation in the early exchanges. With four minutes gone, they had the perfect opportunity to steal in front when Bale raced onto Isco's through pass. With only Eray İşcan for company, however, the Welsh international side-footed wide.

Reaction

It was difficult after the Sergio Ramos red card, but with ten men we controlled the game and we played very well.

We played some excellent football in the first half. I do not know what happened in the second, though. If you make mistakes, then a team like Real Madrid will make you pay.

That wraps it up. Álvaro Arbeloa wns possession and starts a sweeping break by Madrid. Gareth Bale's run takes the defender away and although Isco's initial shot is charged down the ball falls to him again. He wrong-foots Selçuk İnan and then calmly waits for the goalkeeper to commit before rolling the ball into the bottom left corner.
