FC Porto's hopes of progress to the UEFA Champions League knockout stage are hanging by a thread after they were held to a draw by a courageous FK Austria Wien side.

Roman Kienast fired the visitors into a surprise early lead with their first-ever goal in the group stage, and although Jackson Martínez equalised, Porto's failure to find a second means they go to Group G winners Club Atlético de Madrid on matchday six needing a win while hoping second-placed FC Zenit slip up. This was another strong away showing from Austria after their draw at Zenit on matchday two, and they will attempt to get their first victory against the same opponents in Vienna in the final game.

Die Veilchen arrived in northern Portugal as the only one of the 32 teams in the group stage still looking for their first goal, so it was somewhat unexpected when they found the net with their first attack. Kienast picked up a loose pass from Danilo and strode infield before striking a fine low shot inside Helton's left-hand post from outside the penalty area.

To their credit Porto responded and and almost equalised straight away, Heinz Lindner acrobatically tipping over Jackson's firm header from an Alex Sandro cross. Yet Austria were full of confidence and nearly doubled their advantage when an eye-catching Philipp Hosiner run took him in on goal, only for Lucho González to produce a splendid last-ditch tackle.

The home side battled to get back on level teams, yet despite enjoying the lion's share of possession, they found Nenad Bjelica's men to be resolute. There were nevertheless regular openings; Lucho sent Steven Defour through but Lindner was quickly out to parry the attempt to chip him with a sharply deployed left arm.

Paulo Fonseca decided a change of tack was in order for the second half, sending on Silvestre Varela for Defour at the interval. The Portuguese champions restarted with renewed purpose, and were soon level when Jackson nodded in from point-blank range after Eliaquim Mangala had headed back Josué's long corner.

The pressure mounted. Lucho came close to giving Porto the lead, diverting Josué's centre on target only for Lindner to come to the rescue again. Varela then had an effort deflected just over by captain Manuel Ortlechner, before Lucho volleyed over a Danilo pass on the stretch. The outstanding Lindner denied Jackson again in the final seconds as Austria held on to leave Porto facing a nerve-jangling last day.
