Manchester United

UEFA milestones and competition statistics
• On matchday one, David Moyes became the first manager to take charge of United in Europe other than Sir Alex Ferguson since Ron Atkinson guided them to the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1984/85.

• Wayne Rooney is Britain's all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Champions League, moving past Ryan Giggs to 29 on matchday one. Robin van Persie has now scored in ten consecutive UEFA Champions League seasons.

• Rooney has been credited with six assists this term, more than any other player in the competition. Four of them came in the 5-0 matchday five victory at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

• United have scored 547 goals in UEFA competition and conceded 297.

• Marouane Fellaini is available after serving a one-match ban.

General information
• United suffered their second 1-0 home loss in three days on Saturday, going down against Newcastle United FC to complete their first back-to-back league defeats at Old Trafford since May 2002. Rooney was suspended.

• United have only won five of their last 12 league games at Old Trafford and they have managed just eight goals in eight home league games this term.

• United were 12 games unbeaten in all competitions before the 1-0 home defeat by Moyes' former club Everton FC on 4 December. The Toffees had not won at Old Trafford in 21 years.

• Van Persie, who has scored 17 goals in his last 22 games in all competitions for United, returned to the side on Saturday after four weeks out with toe and groin problems.

• Rooney has scored 207 competitive goals for United and is fourth in the club's all-time rankings behind Jack Rowley (211), Denis Law (237) and Sir Bobby Charlton (249).

• Michael Carrick has not played since 10 November because of an Achilles injury; Shinji Kagawa has been ill.

• United's haul of seven points from the opening six league games was their worst start to a season since 1989/90.

UEFA milestones and competition statistics
• The 4-0 loss at Bayer 04 Leverkusen on matchday three equalled Shakhtar's heaviest ever defeat in UEFA competition. They have lost by a four-goal margin on eight occasions.

• Alex Teixeira and Yaroslav Rakitskiy are both a booking away from a ban after picking up two yellow cards.

General information
• Shakhtar were not in action at the weekend as the winter break is already under way in Ukraine. Mircea Lucescu's side rounded off the first half of the season last Tuesday with a 1-0 win at FC Chornomorets Odesa, Luiz Adriano scoring the only goal just before half-time. Their next domestic fixture will be on 1 March when they travel to FC Dynamo Kyiv in the league.

• Shakhtar are five points clear at the league summit going into the winter break. A tally of 41 points from 18 games is ten points shy of their haul at the same stage last term and their worst return since 2008/09, the last time they failed to win the championship.

• Darijo Srna has scored five league goals this season, his best ever return.

• Shakhtar have lost three league games this season – they suffered just one top-flight reverse in each of the previous two campaigns. They have dropped 13 points in the league this term, two more than in the whole of 2012/13.

• Wellington Nem was left out of Shakhtar's UEFA Champions League squad following knee surgery in August but has since regained fitness and made his competitive debut on 26 October.

• Andriy Pyatov's record run of eight clean sheets for Ukraine, a spell of 752 minutes, ended with the 3-0 defeat by France in the 2014 FIFA World Cup play-offs on 19 November as Les Bleus overturned a 2-0 first-leg defeat.

• Bernard scored his first goal for Brazil in a 5-0 win against Honduras in Miami on 16 November.
