FC Barcelona took a big step towards a seventh successive UEFA Champions League quarter-final appearance as Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves downed ten-man Manchester City FC with a pair of second-half goals.

The pivotal moment of this much-awaited contest arrived eight minutes after the restart when Martín Demichelis upended Messi to concede a penalty, earning himself a red card before the Barcelona forward sent Joe Hart the wrong way from the spot. Barcelona doubled their lead in the final moments through Alves, leaving City with a mountain to climb in the round of 16 second leg on 12 March.

Reaction

You cannot make mistakes like we did against a great team like them. It will always be costly. We will try our best at the Nou Camp but the second goal makes it very difficult.

For ten minutes during the first half we lost control a little but in the rest of the game we did well. We have to keep calm and continue along the same path – in no way are we going to relax.

  • End Time
    The final whistle is blown.
A brave effort from ten-man Manchester City but in the end, the numerical difference told and Barcelona took full advantage. A Lionel Messi penalty after the No10 had been brought down by Martín Demichelis and a sublime team goal finished by Daniel Alves has given City a lot to do in the second leg.

    Daniel Alves (Barcelona) scores!
Gerard Piqué plays the ball out to Daniel Alves on the right. He plays a first-time pass into Neymar who supplies a lovely return ball to the right-back. His first touch takes him away from the defender and he calmly slots it through Joe Hart's legs to make it 2-0.
