A late Diego Costa header earned Club Atlético de Madrid a 1-0 win at AC Milan but the Spanish side also had goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and a portion of luck to thank for their first-leg lead in this round of 16 tie.

With Clarence Seedorf making his coaching debut in a competition he won four times as a player, the Rossoneri were twice denied by the woodwork in a fluent first half, with Courtois getting a crucial touch both times. Openings were harder to come by in the second period but Atlético never really looked like scoring until Diego Costa swooped seven minutes from time, his fifth goal in four UEFA Champions League games this season.

Match in 5

  • Atlético's first UEFA Champions League knockout victory
  • Diego Costa scores 27th goal of season to secure late win
  • Rossoneri hit woodwork twice in first half
  • Seedorf defeated in first European game as coach
  • Return leg at Vicente Calderón on 11 March

Reaction

Everybody saw what my players did tonight and I am proud. It will be tough in the return leg – we really respect Atlético but we can do it.

We know it will still be difficult in the second leg. We have taken a solid step but there is so much still to play for at the Vicente Calderón.

    Diego Costa (Atlético) scores!
Diego Costa scores his 27th goal of this season, and his fifth of the UEFA Champions League campaign so far in just four matches. Ignazio Abate's attempt at a headed clearance from Gabi's corner loops over the six yard box and forces the Spaniard to backpedal to adjust his footing in order to power a header just inside Christian Abbiati's right hand post.
