FC Shakhtar Donetsk earned another dominant victory against FC BATE Borisov to put themselves in sight of the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

Ukraine defender Ivan Ordets made his UEFA competition debut for Shakhtar with Olexandr Kucher injured but otherwise Shakhtar had the same XI that won 7-0 at BATE. Douglas Costa had an early free-kick saved, and though BATE began in expansive fashion, that left them vulnerable to Shakhtar's quick attacks.

One of those caught BATE out in the 19th minute. After a fine run by Taras Stepanenko, Vyacheslav Shevchuk's cross from the left was headed back by Luiz Adriano and Darijo Srna's rising strike deflected off Mikhail Gordeychuk and past Sergei Chernik.

A Shevchuk centre was turned over by Adriano and Teixeira shot just wide as Shakhtar piled on the pressure. But unlike two weeks ago, BATE were one and not six down at half-time, Chernik getting in the way of a stinging Teixeira half-volley and then stopping another attempt on the line immediately before the whistle. But in the confusion that followed, BATE's Anri Khagush received his second yellow card.

Edgar Olekhnovich arrived in a BATE reshuffle yet within three minutes of the restart it was 2-0 as Adriano cleverly dummied a Srna pass that sent Teixeira clear to finally clip the ball past Chernik. BATE again were being given a torrid time whenever Adriano or Texeira had the ball while Ordets turned a Stepanenko delivery narrowly past the post.

Just before the hour Shakhtar had a penalty when Evgeni Yablonski brought down Adriano, who slotted the ball beyond Chernik's dive. The win virtually sealed, Marlos came off the bench for Shevchuk and slalomed past four defenders before rifling wide; he and his fellow Shakhtar attackers were putting on a football exhibition.

BATE had the odd attack, but the defeat was as comprehensive as the record-breaking night in Borisov, especially after Adriano turned in Costa's looping cross. Adriano's treble, and eighth in two outings against BATE, came in added time when teed up by Ordets. To pip Shakhtar to second, BATE must beat FC Porto and Athletic Club and hope both defeat Mircea Lucescu's men.
