A place in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League is on the line when AS Roma and Manchester City FC face off at the Stadio Olimpico on matchday six.

• Roma will qualify with a win and will also advance if they draw and PFC CSKA Mosvka hold FC Bayern München in the other Group E game. If CSKA lose, Roma will progress with a goalless draw but not a score draw.

• City must win and hope that CSKA do not, or get a score draw and hope CSKA lose. If they lose, they are out of Europe altogether.

• Roma are looking to reach the UEFA Champions League's latter stages for the seventh time, City for the second year running.

• Both sides' fortunes were affected by added-time goals on matchday five, City snatching victory against Bayern and Roma dropping two points at CSKA.

Match background

Roma
• Roma have gone from one extreme to another in their Group E home games, beating CSKA 5-1 on matchday one but then losing 7-1 to Bayern on matchday three – their joint heaviest defeat in UEFA competition.

• Roma have won their last three home matches against Premier League opposition.

• Roma's last UEFA Champions League home meetings with English sides came in 2008/09. Francesco Totti and Daniele De Rossi played in the 3-1 home win over Frank Lampard's Chelsea FC in the group stage. Totti then featured in a 1-0 success over an Arsenal side including Gaël Clichy and Samir Nasri in the round of 16, although the Giallorossi lost 7-6 on penalties.

• Roma lost the 1984 European Champion Clubs' Cup final to Liverpool FC on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico.

Manchester City
• City have never won in Italy where their record is W0 D2 L2.

• City's most recent victory, home or away, against an Italian team was the 3-0 triumph against AC Milan in the 1978/79 UEFA Cup third round, which secured a 5-2 aggregate success. Brian Kidd, now assistant manager, scored in both legs.

Coach and player links
• In 2004/05, his first season in Europe, Manuel Pellegrini led Villarreal CF to a 1-1 draw against Roma's neighbours SS Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico in the UEFA Cup group stage. A year later Villarreal beat FC Internazionale Milano on away goals in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals (1-2 away, 1-0 home).

• Pellegrini faced Milan twice in the group stage: with Real Madrid CF (2-3 h, 1-1 a; 2009/10) and with Málaga CF (1-0 h, 1-1 a; 2012/13).

• As LOSC Lille coach, Rudi Garcia lost 3-1 on aggregate to Liverpool in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League round of 16 (1-0 h, 0-3 a).

• Totti's goal in the 1-1 matchday two draw between the sides was his first against English opposition since his winner against Newcastle United FC (1-0 h) in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round.

• Morgan De Sanctis was in the Napoli side that took four points off City in the 2011/12 group stage.

• Lampard scored a penalty past De Sanctis in Chelsea's 2011/12 round of 16 victory over Napoli.

• Aleksandar Kolarov made 82 Serie A appearances and scored six goals for Roma's neighbours Lazio (2007–10). He played in four Rome derbies (W2 L2), scoring in a 4-2 home success over the Giallorossi in April 2009.

• With ACF Fiorentina (2008–13), Stevan Jovetić played six Serie A games against Roma and scored in home (3-0) and away (2-1) victories in 2011/12.

• Ashley Cole's record against City with Crystal Palace FC (loan), Arsenal FC and Chelsea is W14 D3 L5. In his first home game against City for Arsenal in September 2000, he hit the opener in a 5-0 victory. He later got the only goal in Arsenal's 1-0 win in Manchester in 2004/05.

• Edin Džeko and Radja Nainggolan traded goals in Bosnia and Herzegovina's 1-1 home draw with Belgium in a UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier on 13 October. Miralem Pjanić and Vincent Kompany also played.

• Sergio Agüero and Pablo Zabaleta helped Argentina beat Pjanić and Džeko's Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 in their opening 2014 FIFA World Cup game.

• Yaya Touré and Gervinho's Ivory Coast side were eliminated from the World Cup by a last-gasp 2-1 loss to the Greece of José Holebas, Kostas Manolas and Vasilis Torosidis.

• David Silva scored the first goal as Spain defeated De Rossi's Italy 4-0 in the UEFA EURO 2012 final.

• Lampard and Cole were Chelsea team-mates from 2006 to 2014.

• Maicon made 13 appearances for City in 2012/13.

• In two seasons with Arsenal (2011–13), Gervinho did not beat City in three attempts.

• As a Newcastle United FC player (2013–14), Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa lost all three games against City.

Match facts

Roma
• Nainggolan and Maicon are both a booking away from suspension.

• The Giallorossi had won all seven of their home league matches this term by at least a two-goal margin before Saturday's 2-2 draw with US Sassuolo Calcio. Trailing 2-0 and with Daniele De Rossi sent off early in the second half, Adem Ljajić pulled one back with 12 minutes remaining before hitting a 93rd-minute equaliser.

• Roma's run of six Serie A clean sheets at home ended on 30 November but they preserved their 100% league record at the Stadio Olimpico, defeating FC Internazionale Milano 4-2.

• Holebas put Roma 2-1 up against Inter, his first goal since arriving from Olympiacos FC in the summer.

• Sidelined since 18 October because of a knee injury, Maicon returned to action against Inter.

• On 3 December Leandro Castán, who has played just once this term, underwent neurosurgery to resolve "a congenital vascular alteration in his brain".

Manchester City
• Touré is serving the second of his three-match ban but Fernandinho returns from suspension. Clichy, Agüero and Zabaleta are all a yellow card away from a ban.

• City have won their last five games in all competitions; they had not previously managed more than two successive victories this season.

• Agüero has scored 16 goals in his last 15 outings for City, but went off with a knee injury early in Saturday's 1-0 victory at home to Everton FC.

• Džeko, out with a calf injury since 8 November, returned to action as a second-half substitute against Everton.

• Zabaleta scored his first goal of the season in Sunderland, while Jovetić took his tally to four this Premier League campaign – already surpassing last term.

• Clichy scored his first goal for club or country since a League Cup strike for Arsenal FC in March 2011 as City won 3-0 at Southampton FC on 30 November. The 29-year-old's only previous goal in 12 Premier League seasons came in November 2008.

• David Silva has not featured since picking up a knee injury in City's 2-0 League Cup loss to Newcastle United FC on 29 October.
