• They followed that with home victories over FC Astana and Galatasaray AŞ to finish first in Group C.

• Last season the Rojiblancos beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 in the round of 16 home leg after losing the away game by the same score and eventually won through on penalties. After a 0-0 home draw with Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals they lost 1-0 away.

• Atlético have lost all four two-legged ties they have contested with Dutch clubs but have won four of the five home games.

• Their sole defeat came in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, going down 3-2 at home to AFC Ajax after a 1-1 draw away.

• Home and away, Atlético's record against Dutch opponents is W5 D2 L4.

• Atlético have won ten of the 12 UEFA competition ties in which they drew the first leg away from home, losing only to Derby County FC (1974/75 UEFA Cup second round, 2-2 away, 2-2 home, 6-7 penalties) and AFC Ajax in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals (1-1 away, 2-3 home)

• In Group B they failed to win any of their away games – losing 3-2 at PFC CSKA Moskva and 2-0 at VfL Wolfsburg while their visit to Manchester United FC ended 0-0 – but finished second on ten points.

• This is PSV's 13th away match against Spanish opposition and they are still seeking a first victory. Their record in Spain is W0 D4 L8; overall it is W4 D11 L10.

• Their five visits to Madrid have produced four defeats, the solitary draw coming in the first leg of the 1987/88 European Cup semi-final with Real Madrid which set up an away goals triumph for PSV after a goalless second leg. The Dutch club won the final on penalties against Benfica.
