Helmut Schön

Date of birth: 15/09/1915 (died 23/02/1996)

Perhaps Germany's finest coach, Schön was in charge of West Germany from November 1964 to June 1978, overseeing four FIFA World Cup campaigns. A shrewd tactician and man-manager, he remains the only coach to have led a team to victory in both the UEFA European Championship and the World Cup. The continental triumph came first, in 1972, when his spectacular new team swept all before them in Belgium. Two years later the man who had fled East Germany in 1950 took West Germany to the top of the world. He also finished runners-up in both tournaments, at the 1966 World Cup and 1976 UEFA European Championship.
