Yartsev rewarded by Russia

Georgi Yartsev will lead Russia at UEFA EURO 2004™ after signing a two-year deal with the Russian Football Union.

Long-term deal
RFU president Viacheslav Koloskov confirmed the 54-year-old coach had been offered a long-term contract and would stay in charge of the national team until the end of the qualifying campaign for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where Russia have been drawn alongside Portugal, Latvia, Slovakia, Estonia, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.

Play-off win
Yartsev, who was appointed in August last year, had been out of contract after leading Russia to EURO 2004™ with a sequence of good results in their final three qualifying games and a two-legged play-off victory against Wales. Vadim Evseev scored the vital goal in Cardiff to give Yartsev's team a 1-0 aggregate victory.
