Carlos Queiroz's second spell as coach of Portugal has ended after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) relieved him of his duties.
"The FPF board unanimously decided to cancel the contract of Carlos Queiroz with immediate effect," said president Gilberto Madaíl. The former Sporting Clube de Portugal and Real Madrid CF coach had been suspended by the FPF for Portugal's first two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers – a 4-4 draw at home to Cyprus and a 1-0 defeat in Norway.
Queiroz succeeded Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2008, returning for a second stint having previously held the national team post from 1991 to 1993. A former coach of South Africa, Queiroz led Portugal to the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs. They navigated the group stage in South Africa after beating Korea DPR 7-0 and securing goalless draws with Ivory Coast and Brazil, but lost 1-0 to eventual winners Spain in the last 16.
