Brazil too good for Iceland

A weakened Iceland side went down 6-1 to Brazil in a friendly international in Cuiaba.

Iceland were swept aside by Brazil as they went down to a 6-1 defeat in Cuiaba on Thursday.

Weakened lineup
Atli Edvaldsson's squad featured only two non-domestic-based players, Árni Gautur Arason from Rosenborg BK and Molde Ólafur Stígsson, and their weakened lineup offered little resistance to a Brazil side that left the field to boos, despite the margin of victory.

Fourth-minute lead
The four-times FIFA World Cup-winners took the lead after just four minutes through 1903 Gremio FBPA midfield player Anderson Polga, then doubled their advantage on the quarter-hour with a Kleiberson goal.

Polga double
Brazil, made up entirely of home-based players, then scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half, São Paulo FC striker Kaka and Gilberto Sliva netting. Edilson made it five on 63 minutes, and Polga added his second and Brazil's sixth with 17 minutes left.

Steinsson consolation
There was a 76th-minute consolation for Iceland when Grétar Steinsson pulled one back, but they were unable to reduce the deficit further. Brazil should face a tougher test in their next match against Yugoslavia on 27 March.
