Points please Eriksson

No surprise
At first it seemed that the Swiss habit of doing well against sides from the British Isles was set to continue as England struggled to break them down, but once the record-breaking Wayne Rooney had opened the scoring it became hard work for Switzerland and it was no surprise that England ran out comfortable winners with another goal from Rooney and one from Steven Gerrard.

Ten men
Bernt Haas's dismissal for two bookable offences early in the second half meant that Switzerland had to play with ten men for a long period for the second successive match, and certainly the absence of the suspended Johann Vogel here was significant as Jakob Kuhn's men failed to protect their back four as well as they might have.

Miracle required
After France's 2-2 draw against Croatia in tonight's late game, England will need just a point from their last match against Croatia, while Switzerland will need a miracle as they now have to beat France at this stadium on Monday.

Eriksson relieved
"A good job done," said England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, clearly relieved after the shock of conceding two late goals to France. "When you lose a game as we lost on Sunday you never know the reaction. I always thought it would be very good and it was. I am very happy.

Heat a factor
"Rooney was fantastic, he scored two beautiful goals and worked very hard as well. He is only 18 and I hope he will do better and better. The heat affected both teams, they were all tired at the end but that's normal."

'Good result'
Carlsberg Man of the Match Rooney said: "It is a relief to win - and to win 3-0 is a good result for us. I played a good game, as did the whole team and it was good for me that I scored. It's a bit of a relief after being beaten by France.

Dismissal key
"When Haas was sent off, we took advantage and turned the game in our favour. I think my second goal is the most important goal of my career because it really stopped the Swiss."

Kuhn praise
Switzerland coach Kuhn paid tribute to Eriksson's side. "I congratulate the English team who played very well," he said. "I am a bit surprised by the referee. I have my doubts about the red card. But this doesn't help us now.

'Great achievement'
"In these weather circumstances, to play very well especially in the second half, was already a great achievement. We have to perform well against the French and do our best to rebuild the reputation of Swiss football."
