"A dream will come true for all the people of Lyon," said Lyon's mayor Gérard Collomb as club president Jean-Michel Aulas laid the foundation stone at the new Grand Stade de Lyon.

A host of dignitaries were in attendance on Tuesday as Oympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas laid the foundation stone at the new Grand Stade de Lyon.

The 58,000-seater ground, also known as the Stade des Lumières, will be one of France's ten UEFA EURO 2016 venues. Construction work has already started in the suburb of Decines-Charpieu, 10km east of central Lyon.

"This stadium will benefit everyone," Aulas said, while the city's mayor Gérard Collomb added: "A dream will come true for all the people of Lyon."

The arena will be part of a complex spread over 50 hectares and featuring a training ground for OL as well as hotels and office buildings. The arena will replace the Stade de Gerland, Lyon's home since 1950, which was one of the seven venues that staged the 1984 UEFA European Championship. The new ground is set to be finished during the 2015/16 season.
