Late goal saves Malta

Malta 1-1 Andorra
Injury-hit Malta left it late to earn a draw at home against an enthusiastic Andorran side in the national stadium in Ta'qali.

Experimental team
Malta coach Siegfred Held was forced to field an experimental team as both teams warmed up for the start of their respective EURO 2004™ qualifying campaigns in September. The hosts started brightly and nearly took the lead in the 15th minute when William Camenzuli fired a powerful shot just wide of the upright defended by Jesus Alvarez in the Andorra goal.

Anxious moments
It was the best chance of the first 45, but the game came to life after the restart. Hibernians FC's top marksman Adrian Mifsud was brought into the attack and he immediately caused the Andorran rearguard some anxious moments.

Visitors take the lead
But despite Malta's pressure, it was Andorra who took the lead in the 77th minute. Lidelfons Lima worked an opening and a fired home past Mario Muscat in the Malta goal. Yet the home team were not to be denied and responded with style and determination, Daniel Theuma equalising four minutes from time.
