Plus points for Portugal

The latest BenQ Official Statistics update helps explain Portugal's progress to the final.

As befitting their status as UEFA EURO 2004™ final favourites, Portugal top many of the rankings in the BenQ Official Statistics for the tournament.

Top shots
Despite only coming in joint third in the listing for most goals scored in the competition, Portugal have had more shots than any other team in the competition with 96, nine more than the Czech Republic and more than double Greece, who have only had 43 shots.

Target practice
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team come second in the ranking for shots on target with 35. Despite having three players in the top six for total shots, only one Portuguese player, Luís Figo, is in the top ten for shots on target.

Wide off the mark
Not surprisingly, Portugal, along with the Czech Republic, jointly head the rankings for shots wide with 40 shots. Figo and Maniche both feature highly in the player rankings.

Corner count
Portugal also excel from set-pieces – witness their two strikes in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands. And Portugal have won more corners than any other team with 49. Figo has taken 23 and Deco 22, with Rui Costa with two and Cristiano Ronaldo with one, the other corner-takers.

Pass masters
Portugal are also way ahead in the passing statistics having played 2067 passes, 22 more than the Netherlands in second place. They are always miles in front in the short passing stakes with 1681 passes completed. Maniche is second in the rankings for passes with Deco also in the top five.
